#1A: Good Is Not The Same As [Cheyenne Harvey-Stoltz]
Cheyenne Harvey-Stoltz
Below are the four images I chose:
"Good" is not the same as "Important": The photo selected depicts an opium field, opium farmers, and solar panels in Afganistan. In recent times and times before, there has been lots of discussion and attempts to reduce the opium trade out of Afganistan. I feel as though this is important in regards to the War On Drugs that the world has been juggling for decades. The trade of synthetics, heroine, cocaine, as well as other illicit drugs have been in the forefront of many international governments to take down narcotics trafficking as a whole. At the moment, Afganistan seems to be in the spotlight.https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/29/world/asia/afghanistan-opium-taliban.html?searchResultPosition=1
"Good" is not the same as "Interesting": This is a portrait style photograph taken of Abraham Lincoln's late wife, Mary Todd Lincoln after Lincoln was assassinated. In the photo you can see the outline of an individual behind Mary, believed to be the ghost of President Lincoln. This photo was taken by a photographer who had made a career taking photographs, such as this one, where the ghost of the subjects loved ones would be present. During this time, being the late 19th century, there was no way to know whether or not these photos were really depicting sprits; therefore, when the photographer was taken to court on charges of fraudulence, there was no way to prove the illegitimacy in a court of law and the photographer was acquitted. However, there has been conversation and investigation into this style of photography and how it could have been curated among modern photographers where theories have been shown.

"Good" is not the same as "Useful": Dental evidence is used in a number of ways in the field of criminology. It has been used in cases to show connections and disconnections of suspects to crimes. In this photo, the bite marks found on a victim and the dental imprints of infamous serial killer Ted Bundy are displayed. This evidence was used in the trials to put Ted Bundy away for the murder of multiple women, including Lisa Levy, the woman who's body was found with the bite marks. This evidence was important and very helpful to the prosecution in regards to putting Bundy behind bars. However, this form of evidence has shown to be problematic and lacking scientific basis in recent times.

"Good" is not the same as "Liking": I took this photo in my high school photography class. I really like this picture because of how distinct the silhouette is and how dreamy the sky looks. The colors are somewhat natural but dramatic. This photo is just quite pretty to me :).
Thanks for reading :)

I love the last photo you took! The thin orange-ish line of light on the right side of the figure's head adds a really nice contrast to the blue and purple background.
ReplyDeleteI really love the last photo of yours that you took! Not to echo Sydney's comments on your work, but I really love the color contrast you have going, especially considering how orange and blue work as opposites. I also appreciate the the use of positive and negative space in that photo! I just wish it was taken to be wider so I could see more of the color! Additionally, I loved your take on the "useful" prompt. It is some super interesting stuff. However, when looking at that photograph, I did not find it very pleasing to look at. One of the only good pieces of that photo is the contrast in like sizes being diagonal to each other. I felt like that created a sense of balance in the photography. Nonetheless, I appreciated your take on all of these prompts. Well done!!
ReplyDeleteCheyenne,
ReplyDeleteYour Afghani opium field photograph caught my eye for a few reasons. 1- you seem like the type of person with niche interests in documentaries/world news. 2- The "Eastern" perspective is quite rare in conversation here in the States. 3- The image blends historic agricultural practices with the advent of major technological advances in the area. For these reasons alone, I find myself pondering the intricacies of other esoteric subjects that may interest you. Sick, Cheyenne. Truly sick stuff.
