#4: ABSTRACTIONS WIP (Sydney Nguyen)

 Abstractions: WIP

This series was particularly fun to shoot because it required me to completely disregard previous associations I had with everyday things in order to capture them in abstraction. Although it isn't my favorite photo from the bunch, I like the 3rd one because of the subject's ambiguity (it's the spiral binding of a notebook). I think it kind of looks like rippling water at first glance...! I'm pretty torn between a few of these so included them all here. Also the 4th ones look like the Hulk :-)

1. Strong Vignette

2. B&W

3. B&W + Color Grading

4. 3 colors

5. Square cropping

  1. Such magical photos, Syd! I love the first set of photos. I think that shadows on subjects like sheets, curtains, and delicate fabrics can be so unique and special; i think you do a really amazing job at capturing this concept. The bicycle photo is really nice as well, I appreciate the use of the crop. Without the RAW image, I honestly don't know if I would be able to tell it was a bike tire - which I think speaks perfectly to the assignment. The three colors are really emphasized which I think it really impressive. However, I wish the colors were a little more different, or incorporated all over the subject in different spots. The color grading photo is really amazing as well, I had no idea what it could be but I thought it could be so many things at the same time. Always impressed with your pieces!

  2. Syd, these are really good as always! In your first photograph, I really like the first edited version. I might even play up the grain and detail you can see in it. I like the choice of color you made it. I know you said the third photograph is not your favorite, but it is definitely mine! It is wonderful. Super ambiguous! Perfectly captures what the assignment's goal was in my opinion. With the tri color image, I might go in a different direction. I believe it has more colors than three after a first glance. I think you could potentially make the plate photograph into three colors with more editing, if that is a road you want to go down. Speaking of the speak image, I love your use of highlights and shadows in it. You definitely made the right choice in making it black and white. I would have possibly cropped it a bit more. Maybe try a square? Your photos are always exciting to me. Keep it up! :)
